My company, Dan Wagner Window Cleaning, has been serving the fine city of Scranton, PA since 1986. Scranton is a historic city for many reasons. This community came into its own, partly as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution. The coal industry was very big and was instrumental in population growth in Scranton, especially since the 1880’s. Other industries which figured prominently in Scranton, PA were garment materials such as silk and lace. The advent of many new factories and mills attracted  a substantial outside population, be it from neighboring New York State or Europe. These influences on the culture are still evident in the style of houses, many of the Victorian-era variety. Window cleaning can be a challenge for these types of homes, but we marvel at the quality and longevity of the materials and workmanship.

Understandably, the history and culture of Scranton has largely been working-class. While many blue-collar men and women today are used to taking care of the maintenance of their homes, many also are happy to reward their hard work by hiring a professional window cleaning company to provide beautiful views of the surrounding Moosic Mountains. As is often the case, things change or shift with time. This is no different for Scranton. While the economy now is far more dependent on fields such as education, health care, technology, and tourism, there is still a pervasive blue collar spirit that lives in Scranton. In my opinion, that is a good thing. A healthy mix of those who work with their hands and those who work more with their minds makes for a well-rounded culture in northeastern PA. We have had the privilege of cleaning the windows at a food establishment that became ever more popular because of the iconic sitcom The Office.

The owners of Alfredo’s Pizza are very community-minded and active in local charities. They remained open all through the time when COVID19 wreaked havoc on many local businesses and citizens, carefully following the protocol of that critical period.
