A Window is a Window-Right?
April 23, 2025
Not all windows are really the same
Thinking that all windows are basically the same is understandable from a homeowner’s perspective. However, a professional window cleaning company will not conclude that any window should should require the same amount of time and effort as any other window. For this reason, when someone calls, messages, or emails us for a price, we will need some detailed information. We definitely try not to make it more complicated than it needs to be. It is greatly appreciated when pictures of the windows are sent for us to look at and from there work up accurate pricing.
Types and Terms that make windows different
Here are some different types of windows that we have tailored pricing for.
Double-hung or single-hung– each of these consists of an upper and lower sash. The difference is that the upper sash on a single-hung window does not move up and down. But they both are 2 panes and have a screen. Note: when two or more of these windows are side-by-side, we don’t consider this one window. For example, if 2 double-hungs are right near each other as they often are, they are 2 windows for a total of 4 separate panes.
Single panes– One pane of glass that makes up the window. They may be specifically called casements, awnings, storm door, man (or pedestrian) door. Bay and bow windows, although used as singular terms, consist of 3 to 5 separate panes, more in some cases.
Skylights, clerestory, and other high windows– the main factor with these windows is that they usually require far more effort and often tall ladders or poles to access as well as roof navigation.
There are variations and extra factors that may affect the pricing for the same basic window type from house to house.
Removable grids require a small amount of extra time to take off, wipe, and replace after cleaning the glass.
Glass that has dividers that aren’t removable create several smaller panes within a window and require considerably more time to detail and get professional results.
Excessive amounts of paint, wood stain, hard water or mineral deposits can add an enormous amount of time to a job if perfection or near perfection is expected. This can affect pricing.
Some windows have an additional set of storm panels which in essence, double the panes to be cleaned. Older double-hungs sometimes have a triple track attached to the outer frame, which holds 2 storm sashes and a screen. This doubles the glass and more than doubles the work required to get access to and clean everything.
Certain windows have removable panes which are either attached on the inside or outside. They can be cleaned ‘as is’ or taken apart and cleaned as 2 separate panes depending on the needs or budget of the homeowner.
All these factors make a difference
We do try to make the initial part of your experience as hassle-free as possible. As you can see, from a window cleaner’s perspective when it comes to pricing, it’s not strictly true that ‘a window is a window’. We are happy to do what it takes to help you decide whether our 5-star service is within your budget!
